Position Title: Water System Operator (Assistant Chief/Chief Operator)
Position Type: Full-Time (40 hours per week, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, with on-call and occasional overtime)
Starting Pay Range: $27.64-$43.72 per hour, commensurate with experience

Position Summary
Morrisville Water & Light is seeking a qualified and motivated professional to join our team in a leadership role within our water division. Depending on experience and certification, this position may be filled as either an Assistant Chief Water Operator or Chief Water Operator (Water Foreman).
This role is responsible for supporting and/or leading the operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of the municipal water system to ensure the delivery of safe, reliable drinking water.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced operator ready to step into a leadership role, or for a current leader seeking to take full responsibility for system operations.

Assistant Chief Water Operator: Supports system oversight and serves as second-in-command; opportunity to advance to Chief Operator
Chief Water Operator / Water Foreman: Leads all water system operations, staff, and regulatory compliance
Key Responsibilities
Operate, maintain, and oversee the municipal water system, including sources, treatment, storage, pumping, and distribution
Ensure compliance with all state and federal drinking water regulations
Monitor water quality, perform and oversee sampling/testing, and ensure accurate reporting
Investigate and resolve system issues, including water quality concerns and operational deficiencies
Oversee or assist with construction, installation, and of new infrastructure
Maintain accurate system records, logs, and performance data
Respond to customer concerns and service requests
Perform Dig Safe mark-outs and field support
Participate in on-call rotation and respond to system emergencies
Support or lead staff training, scheduling, and daily work coordination
Promote a strong culture of safety, professionalism, and teamwork
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements (Assistant Chief Level):
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver’s license
Vermont Class 3 Water Operator Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
Strong safety awareness and commitment to safe work practices
Experience in water system operations and maintenance
Strong teamwork, communication skills and computer technology literacy
Strong understanding of water treatment and distribution fundamentals
Chief Operator Level:
Vermont Class 3 Water Operator Certification or higher
Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience
Proven experience with regulatory compliance, reporting, and system oversight
Ability to independently manage system operations and staff
